Q: what apart from statins and a healthy low fat diet keep my cholestrol levels?
at an acceptable level. I heard peanut butter and bananas...though both are fattening are they not?
Wow thanks. We think we know it all until you ask other people who know far more than you do!
A: Just make sure you are eating a well balanced diet including your '5 a day' fruit and veg, at least two servings of oily fish per week, make sure your daily salt intake does not exceed 6g and take regular excercise. Exercise boosts HDL and decreases LDL.
The main sources of saturated fats are:
Cooking fats and spreads, fatty meat and meat products- such as red meat and poultry skin, full fat milk, cheese and other dairy products, chips, biscuits, cakes & pastries, and
sweets and chocolate. As long as you try and eat these foods in moderation and limit intake where possible, your chances of developing high cholesteroal are lessened.
Saturated fat can increase the amount of cholesterol produced in your liver, so more is present in your blood.
Q: What is bad for the heart apart from cholestrol levels being too high, being overweight? Anything else?
LOL, David D!!!!
Also, LOL, The Brain! A bullet, I'm sure... LOL, love it!
A: High blood pressure, poorly-controlled diabetes, not exercising enough, having a stressful lifestyle, smoking, illegal drugs and having a family history of heart problems. And probably many more besides!
Q: after starting a cholestrol treatment how long before your cholestrol levels start to drop?
A: I had high cholesteral last year and didnt take any meds. I changed my diet.I stopped drinking soda and started drinking orange juice.I only ate things that helped lower and remove cholesteral. That basically means no salt. Also youll want to be more active.I lost 77lbs. in 3 months and never was hungry! Its hard to get started but it gets easy. You'll be surprised how much better you'll feel just eating healthy!
Q: What are the reccomened Cholestrol levels for a 49 year old man?
What is just a "normal" or "safe" level?
A: The 'official' number is under 200. However, recent research suggests that cholesterol should be under 160.
However, total cholesterol doesn't tell the whole story. More important is the ratio of LDL (bad cholesterol) to HDL (good cholesterol). The goal is for the ratio to be less than 3.
Q: How to increase good cholestrol levels in the blood?
A: To increase HDL (good cholesterol) exercising is probably the most effective way- aerobic exercise in particular and any exercise that raises your heart rate for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. With regards to food, try and eat at least 3 portions of oily fish per week, avocado oil or olive oil is good too.

Q: Alternatives in keeping cholestrol levels under control. Not keen?
on taking statins but if I must I must I suppose. I keep to a good low fat diet; exercise do not smoke rarely drink but still it is about 6.3UK readings
I do not have saturated fats in my diet and I have a really healthy diet and life style walk 2-3 miles daily and gardening mad but I still have this cholestrol problem which I believe can also be the cause of my HBP. So there you go!
A: i read that oats (eg porridge) reduce cholesterol. my dad recently got told to improve his diet and his doctor said its had a significant effect on his cholesterol in a short period of time, so maybe you wont need statins if you keep to a good diet - BUT i prob should emphasise that you shouldnt take my advice over your doctors
Q: What are the mechanics of oats keeping cholestrol levels at bay. I ask?
because whilst I am on statins, recent reports are suggesting that statins have more side effects than first thought. And so the ideal would be natural inhibitors. I have bad LDL inherited through a bad geneeven though I have a healthy eating lifestyle and now an excercise regime that ought to keep the levels at bay without taking medication to reduce levels of cholestrol in the blood..
I mean how do the oats work at keeping the levels low? Do the oats adhere themselves to the cholestrol and fluch them out of the blood stream; is this the way it works?
A: Oats contain high levels of dietary fiber, manganese, selenium, and magnesium and beta-glucan. Beta glucan is what helps to lower blood LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol).
Beta-glucan is a fiber-type complex sugar (polysaccharide) derived from the cell wall of baker’s yeast, oat and barley fiber, and many medicinal mushrooms, such as maitake.
Studies show that in people with high cholesterol (above 220 mg/dl), consuming just 3 grams of soluble oat fiber per day typically lowers total cholesterol by 8 to 23 percent. 3 g of soluble oat fiber can be found in just one bowl of oatmeal - it can be that easy!"
Q: Do you know what high cholestrol levels can do to your overall health.?
I know but do you know.... are you aware of the potential hazards?
The only reason that I posted this question was to highlight the little known fact that the eyes can be effected dramatically by high levels of cholestrol. And that in some case the bad cholestrol cannot be avoided if it is a gene thing though it can be controlled by statins and good diet that ought to include things such a s green leafy vegetables.
So I think that everyone ought be screened automatically at say forty years of age for high cholestrol levels, so that it can be controlled if necessary.
I face an eye operation for macular puckering that has been caused by high cholestrol levels that were caused through not fault of my own. Not looking forward to it I can tell you.
A: yes thank you
Q: I have been told i have pcos polycystic ovarine syndrome can this cause problems with cholestrol levels?
A: It could possibly cause problems with cholestrol, but I would recommend checking with your doctor as well to see what they say.
Q: alternative methods for reducing cholestrol levels?
non prescription remedies for reducing cholestrol levels in the body
A: Here are some tips to lower cholesterol naturally & keep it at a healthy level
1. Diet
• Increase soluble fiber intake. By increasing your intake of soluble fiber to 10 grams per day, you can lower your cholesterol levels a great deal according to some recent studies. Some good sources include certain types of fruits, bran and oat products, and many kinds of vegetables.
•Omega-3 fatty acids can lower bad cholesterol levels (LDL) and raise levels of good cholesterol (HDL).
• Cut down on saturated fat and Trans fats.
- Saturated fats are found in animal-based foods, including meats, butter, whole-milk dairy products (including yogurt, cheese, and ice cream), and poultry skin. They are also found in some high-fat plant foods, including palm oil.
- Trans fats are found mostly in fried foods, pastries, cookies, and other similar foods. Avoiding these types of foods limits your calories, fat intake, and helps lower your cholesterol.
• Avoid Red Meat, Eggs, & Whole Milk - Red meats, whole milk, and egg yolks are concentrated cholesterol foods. They should be avoided and replaced with some of the healthier foods that are low in cholesterol.
2. Exercise - Doing regular exercise for about 30 minutes of exercise 3 or 4 times a week can significantly lower the risk for many major life threatening disease. Regular exercise has been found to help lower cholesterol and reduce triglyceride levels.
3. Don't Stress. Stress and anxiety cause chemicals to be released into your body, raise your blood pressure, and reduce blood flow to your heart.
4. LOse weight - Losing weight in a slow and steady manner improves your health and lowers your cholesterol.
5. Avoid smoking. Smoking increases the build up of plaque in the arteries, exacerbating the affects of high levels of LDL cholesterol.
6. Supplements to Lower Cholesterol. Supplements can lower cholesterol naturally without side effects and more or less with same results as drugs. The only difference if there's any, would be the time: it may take a bit longer to lower cholesterol naturally through supplements.
Q: does eating foods containing cholestrol increase your blood cholestrol levels?
A: There was a study where they told people to eat an extra egg every day for a year, to see what it did to their cholesterol. Not a thing.
Q: info on average cholestrol levels for heart patients vs avg population?
I would like to find studies that validate that high cholestrol
leads to heart problems. I read this claim all the time but
no proof is submitted and feel that this isa ruse by pharmacuetical co's to push their ststin products. To date, I have not been able to find a study that shows average cholesterol for heart patients vs the average public
A: I don't know that there is a place with such figures...this is about as close as you get...
