Q: What is the difference between prevention and long-term management of asthma?
My doctor prescribed me "Singulair" to take as a preventative for my asthma. My co-worker insists that the term long-term management of asthma, which is what Singulair says it's used for, is not the same as prevention of asthma. She says it is only good for allergies and exercise-induced asthma. Isn't long-term management another way of saying prevention?!??
A: i would have thought that prevention was stopping the asthma all together and long-term management was just making sure it isn't a huge issue for your whole life
Q: Do asthma prevention medicines actually work?
I have had asthma since I was about three months old. The last 6 months, I have been using my rescue inhaler several times a day. I know this is not normal. I keep seeing advertisements about Singulair and medicines like it. My question is: Do these medicines work?
A: Hi Joni
There is a connection between Vitamin D status and severity of asthma. Also, your mother's Vitamin D status while she was pregnant with you may also have had an effect.
If you follow this link to a Google search on asthma and Vitamin D you'll see a number of studies, including those that are just beginning to recruit subjects. There is increasing interest in Vitamin D's importance in numerous conditions from asthma to diabetes to cancer.

I've also included a link to The Vitamin D Council, where you will find all kinds of info including dosages and testing.
Hope this helps some!
Good luck!
Q: What is the best asthma prevention inhaler for runners?
I'm trying to build up my endurance for running and my lungs and chest tighten up to the point that I can't complete the run. I use FlowVent and I've used Advair. Is there anything out there that actually prevents a small attack?
A: I'm asthmatic and I've found that Advair works well. The salmeterol component is a long-lasting bronchodilator which is also available separately as Serevent if you don't want the corticosteroid effect. I've been on Advair for years and I rarely need my regular inhaler anymore even when exercising (jogging and rowing).
I also tried Singulair for a while, but went back to Advair. Others have used Singulair quite successfully specifically for exercise-induced attacks. It is available as a pill which may appeal to some.
Q: Do air filters help in prevention asthma problems, if so, where can one buy good air filter in India?
Any help would be highly appreciated, thanks.
Thanks, will buy one from Walmart and send it to India.
A: Air filters definately help asthma because allergens can trigger asthma. The best kind is a hepa filter. On the other hand, I have no clue where to find one in India. Wal-mart? ;)
Q: Using Benadryl for asthma prevention?
Okay, I’m sure everyone out there is tired of answering allergy and asthma questions, but I need some answers. First, I have asthma and basic allergies: cats, dogs, pine trees, pollen/ragweed, etc. My question is: will an over-the-counter like Benadryl or Claritin for allergies also work for the prevention of asthma symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest constriction? I currently live north of Tampa Bay, Florida; New Port Richey to be precise, and do not take any other asthma medications. I haven’t needed them for at least three years now.
I'm trying to figure out a reliable medicine to take; I'm going to enlist in the Army and I may have made a tactical error when I told my recruiter I suffer from slight asthma. When I say "slight asthma," it means I only get winded after strenuous running
A: Stay away from the benadryl. For people with asthma the benadryl will dry your lungs out and make you produce to much mucus. Try the claritin for your allergies but it's not going to prevent asthma. Allergies are only one of many triggers. The good thing about Florida (I live in Ft. Lauderdale) is allergy season is not as severe and I'm asthmatic also. If anything just keep a rescue inhaler around so if you need it you have it but if you don't than you don't have to take it, but humidity can be a killer and make you feel tight or wheeze.
Q: what is the best way to cure asthma?want to know other alternative herbal med for my kids asthma.?
my kid is 4yrs old and every month, he will be given antibiotics because he has colds eventually leads to cough and asthma. he has maintenance med, (salmeterol+fluticasone propionate, cetirizine) still he cough. I give him also nebulization (combivent). how can he be asthma free? are there herbal med? or natural asthma prevention? my kid is obese. at 4yrs old he is 29kg. and i find it hard to let him on diet because he cant understand what diet is.how can i let him reduce his weight?
A: don't mess with asthma! Trying a bunch of natural nonsense drugs may get him into a life and death situation. Look at your house, see what is causing his problems, smoking, paint fumes, animal dander, dust etc. eliminate it from your environment and pray for him to outgrow it. a number of kids do. As for the weight, you caused it by overfeeding him, you have to take steps to help him eat healthy foods. Keep him away from jusk food, no soda, no cookies , no crackers....teach him to eat good food and he will lost the weight.

Q: I want to know the source of the radio commercial about household prevention of asthma!?
Specific phrases include: "creepy crawlies like rodents and roaches are bad enough without you leaving food out for them, so leave them a whole lot of NOTHING." "don't leave them a tidbit or nibble."
My friend and I just about died laughing about this commercial and couldn't believe it was actually a real-life paid advertisement.
A: The source was the 'advertiser',they were hoping to gain sales with their ad.
Q: Will missing my regular doses of asthma prevention medication undo the long-term effects of the medicine?
As in it preventing the severity of asthma symptons. Lately when my inhaler runs out its never convinient to get a refill before im due to take my next dose, this happened recently (due to my lack of preperation). Cud this be part of the reason my asthma symptons improve for a couple of weeks then get gradually worse for a few weeks and so on?
My preventer inhaler is Seritide Accuhaler 250, ingrediants include salmeterol (long-acting bronchodilator) and fluticasone (corticisteroid), i take 2 doses twice a day
A: That is a decent dose of Seretide and being a steroid MUST NOT be stopped suddenly. Not only does this put you at risk of an asthma episode but, since your body is used to quite high dose synthetic steroid it does not respond normally and produce its own steroids so well when they are required.
Q: any complementary medicine for the prevention of phlegm in asthma?
Hi! my 6 year old child gets asthma when she has a cold, it usually starts by building up mucus/pleghm leading to the narrowing of the airways causing chest spasms and asthma, I control the production of mucus with preventer inhalers but I wonder wether there is any herbal medicine or syrup that my child can take alongside her preventer so to keep steroid at minimum dose, I am worried about the effects of steroids in the long run. Is it better a chinese medicine or Holland and Barrett? or perhaps I should contact a registered qualified herbalist? Thanks for information.
A: My mother's remedy for such like.
Cut an onion in half.
Chop one half up fine and place in a saucer.
Pour over two tablespoons of good quality vinegar.
Sprinkle a teaspoonful of sugar and cover with another saucer.
Leave overnight for twelve hours.
Place the remaining half in the bedroom.
Next day take one spoonful of the juice each five hours.
Repeat a fresh batch daily for five days.
The liquor frees up the airways and loosens up the the mucus.
The piece in the bedroom removes all airborne viruses.
It works and is natural.
Cures all sorts of chest problems.
I am 83.
Q: My kitten has asthma and has been taking prednisone and baytril medications daily.?
He still has attacks once a day although he has been tapering down on his prednisone the last two weeks. Does anyone know of any transdermal treatments recommended by a vet for prevention of asthma attacks? I don't think he will do well on inhalers. He already hates meds. Does your cat take prednisone injections?
A: My cat has severe asthma along with bad lungs on top of it all. He takes heavy doses of steroids along with an inhaler. I can not think of a transdermal treatments. I do not think it will last very long in your kitten's lungs. The inhaler called Flovent has steroids in the medication to last longer in the lungs and keep the airways open. My cat has been treated several times for infections in the lungs due to him coughing more often and the combination of his asthma medications and Baytril had helped him. I would discuss with your vet what else you can do. I know my cat hated the inhaler. It scared him for awhile because he did not like the mask over his nose to be able to breathe in the medication of the puff. It does take them awhile to get use to it.
Q: Prevention of Asthma attack?
what is the precautions of Asthma Attack and is the most useful tablets to prevent asthma attack .Please give me a answer only for concern doctors.
A: For Doctor advice you should ask a doctor - but i can recommend drinking coffee or tea just when you feel an attack is coming on - the caffeine will open your airways.
Q: does asthma have a cure? if not what are the mode of prevention?
i really dont know if i have asthma but i know that i get chocked up if i take too much of oily foods, or when i inheal dust or at times when am in the petrol station.
also i noticed i have this constant cool i mean watery nose stuff like that.
A: it sounds like you have allergies not asthma. If you had asthma you would have shortness of breath and heavy breathing at times the only way to keep it under control is by prescribed inhalers, puffers. if yours is allergies they sell allergy meds and allergy nasal sprays at the drug store take one pill before you are in these situations allot of people wait till an attack and usually it does not work for them for my allergies i take reactine my daughter takes a nasal spray called Flonase.
