Q: Food allergies?
i have a 3 year old min pin who has vomited all the time ever sinse i got her at 8 weeks but recently has been vomiting a lot (like almost every day) and was wondering if it was maybe something in her food. she has been on the same food sinse about a year old. what are some of the symptoms of food allergies? could it be something else?
A: Could be, but could be lots of other things too, anything to food allergies(allergies can develope after eating the same food for a long period of time), to stress, to any number of conditions and/or diseases( megaesophagus, sensitive stomach, and many many more). Hopefully she is too old for megaesophagus.
Other food allergy symptions include scratching alot, licking of paws, diarrhea. Diarrhea is more often seen with food allergies than vomiting.
You should definitely see your vet for peace of mind. Hopefully it will pass.
If she continues, or developes diarrhea, stops eating, becomes lethargic or depressed, or seems uncomfortable-see you vet right away.
Q: food allergies?
I ate crab legs for an early supper and began itching all over about 4 hrs. later - esp. my feet. no swelling. this has never happened before with this food.
does this mean I'm stuck with food allergies to this food for the rest of my life?
for treatment I took 25mg. benadryl with effective results
A: SEAFOOD IS A COMMON TRIGGER OF FOOD ALLERGIES!
SHELL FISH IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON ... W// CRAB COMMING IN CLOSE BEHIND.
I WOULD STEER AWAY FROM THE SEAFOOD.
COULD THERE OF BEEN ANY OTHER SUBSTANCE THAT CAUSED THIS- SEASONING OR OTHER NEW DISH?
I SUPPOSE YOU COULD GO TO HAVE ALLERGY TESTS DONE, OR STEER AWAY FROM THE CRABS!
Q: Food Allergies?
Anyone know anything about dogs' severe food allergies & their reactions?
Our dog is seeing the vet about his condition but I was just wondering about other peoples experiences.
A: I sympathise with you about your dogs food allergies and hope that you have a vet who is experienced in that area. You do not say what Breed your dog is I know that Shar Peis and West Highland Terriers are susceptible to allergies in general. Has your vet confirmed that it is only food that your dog is allergic to? There are good foods available on the market for food allergies I used to feed a particular brand to my Shar Pei. However when his allergies did not clear up the vet put him on a special veterinary diet, it was some type of rare fish and cereal mix. This still did not clear his allergies and they found out he was allergic to everything, dust mites, grass pollen, seed pollen, cats, most types of household cleaning products and the list goes on. If your dog is a Shar Pei I advise you to enlist the help of a vet who is an expert in this breed. If your dog is just allergic to food then just changing the brand should do the trick. My Shar Pei reacted to his allergies quite severely. His feet would swell up and so would his hocks. His skin use to itch and he use to bite it util it bled. He used to get infections after this, no matter what we did. He also use to smell really badly as his body overproduced yeast due to the allergies in his skin. Shar Peis are quite rare breeds and the severtiy of the allergies seem to be only in this breed . I wish you good luck and good health to your dog. If your dog is a Shar Pei and you have any more questions I would be happy to answer them if I can.
Q: My dog may have food allergies, what kind of food should I get for her?
I took my 8 month old puppy to the vet because she has been scratching a lot lately. He said that it's likely she has allergies he's just not sure what she's allergic to. He told me to give her benedryl throughout the day and bathe her with special shampoo. After doing some research on the internet I've come to the conclusion that it may be food allergies. Before I start cooking her all of these different types of diets I was wondering if anyone had been through the same thing and had any suggestions. I realize that different dogs are allergic to different things but any advice on a good food for dogs with food allergies would be great.
A: My dog has a laundry list of food allergies. I feed her Natural Balance Venison & Brown Rice formula. After 3 days her skin started to get better and the itching stopped. After 4 weeks I started introducing new foods to her one at a time for 3 days only one per week. If I got a reaction I had a positive allergen. My dog is allergic to chicken, lamb, liver, eggs, and wheat. Natural Balance makes 3 foods that my dog could eat.
She also suffers from Summer Itch. This is a common contact dermatitis that dogs get. They react to something in the grass when it is active in the late spring/summer. I bathe my dog once a month with NUSAL-T, a coal tar shampoo.

I spent close to $1000 at the vet before I did this on my own. Food allergies generally do not manifest until a dog is around 18 months. My dog was 10 weeks.
Good luck!
Q: How can starting a certain food too early cause the baby to have allergies?
I don't understand how started a food too early can cause allergies. I've heard not to start any baby on rice cereal until at least 4 months because it can cause the baby to get food allergies, and don't give peanut butter because it can cause allergies. Aren't you either allergic to something or not? I don't understand how feeding a baby rice cereal at 2 or 3 months old can increase their risk of food allergies. Can someone please explain it to me?
A: I don't think that's true at all ! I have 3 kids and they all ate every thing and never got sick , of course if u give too much of anything to a baby they can get sick , because their metabolism isn't ready for solid foods yet. but those aren't allergies.
Q: What is a good food for a cocker spaniel with food allergies?
I called the vet b/c my dog keeps biting at her paws and itching like crazy. She also smells when she itches. The vet says it is most likely food allergies. Does anybody know of a dog food I can pick up at any pet store with the vitamins she needs to put an end to the allergy?
A: Wow!!! This is the same with my dog! We took her to the vet and the vet said the same. We are trying the Natural Balance Potato and duck, it looks like it is working. Hope this helps
Q: How do I know if my cat has food allergies?
My cat has a very bad and neurotic habbit of scratching spots on his body until they become raw and bleeding. Usually it's behind his neck, or in front of his ear. His is a indoor healthy kitty (no fleas!). My vet thought it was ringworm at first, but our cat tested negative. My vet mentioned that sometimes it's an indication of food allergies. Does anyone know much about food allergies in cats? He is being fed perscription diet cat food r/d to help him maintain a healthy weight. Any info, including links, would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
A: You can go to www.littlebigcat.com. Dr. Jean Hovfe has an article there titled, "Food Allergies in Cats."
His scratching is NOT a "bad habit" nor is he "neurotic". His skin itches!
Q: What food should I feed my beagle who has food allergies?
She has hot spots and hair loss around her butt area and on her tail. She scratches excessively. We are treating her hot spots and I am trying to find a food that is suitable to feed her to get rid of the food allergies.
I know Wellness is a good food, but are there other options out there (without a RX for the food) that will be just as good?
A: I use California Natural for my dog with food allergies-it has the least amount of ingredients of any dry food on the market (meaning less to be allergic to) and it's made by a very responsible company and of good quality. A few others you may want to consider are Natural Balance Limited Ingredient and Wellness Simple Food Solutions. Taste of the Wild, Pinnacle, and Evangers are a few others that are good for some dogs with allergy (depending on what the allergy is to), but California Natural would be my first choice.
Q: How can food allergies be so life-threatening that one goes to the ER? Why not minor aches and pain?
Why can't people with food allergies suffer minor aches and pains? Instead, they suffer serious and severe pain to a point that one needs to go to emergency room. It can be so deadly that possible death can occur. Why is that?
A: Unfortunately, allergies aren't tailor-made for our comfort; they simply are what they are. It's sort of like saying, "Why can't a person always have a minor car accident instead of a huge crash?" We don't have control over how it happens or how it manifests itself.
Q: What food is the best dog food for a Labrador Retriever with food allergies?
Our lab suffers from food allergies and we are looking for advice on which products to try. Thanks!
A: Try Innova Evo or California Natural Herring & Sweet Potato.
Innova Evo is a high protein, low carb, zero grain food. Most dogs are allergic to corn, wheat, or rice products, and Evo does not contain any of the above. They have both a poultry version and a red meat version, in case your dog is allergic to either beef or chicken, you can always try the opposite one.
The California Natural (only use the Herring & Sweet Potato, the others are good but not for allergies) is awesome because it has very few ingredients and does not contain grains, chicken, or beef. (Most dogs who are not allergic to the grains could be allergic to domestic meats like chicken, lamb, or beef.)
Both brands are very healthful and do wonders for allergies. Give your dog at least 4-6 weeks to see a reduction in symptoms. If your dog experiences vomiting or diarrhea for more than 24 hours, stop feeding the new food immediately. Transition your dog gradually by mixing the two foods and gradually increasing the new food until that's all he's eating. Start counting weeks to notice the changes AFTER he's eating 100% new food. During this time DO NOT give your dog ANY treats outside of his food, because you don't know what he might be allergic to. It's best to find a dry food he's definitely not allergic to and let all his symptoms clear up before offering treats again, because then you can offer one type of treat at a time and see if he reacts to it or not. If you want to give him something extra, both brands sell a canned food that has the same ingredients as the dry, and you can feed that as a treat or mix it with the dry food.
Good luck!
Q: Are there any resources for recipes that work around food allergies?
I have recently been diagnosed with a large amount of food allergies and the majority are healthy food items including soy and all legumes, peanuts, all nuts except almonds, rice, mustard seeds, sesame seeds, and a variety of other seeds, broccoli, turkey, cocoa beans, fish and seafood and this is just to the things I was tested for. It seems that most healthy cooking today includes one or more of these items and soy is found in everything. I am looking for some everyday great recipes that are healthy.
A: Try this website. It has a bunch of different diet formats. Good luck!
Q: What should I feed my dog with food allergies?
After just spending £36 on a 2 week supply of Hills z/d food for my staffy/lab can you recommend a good homemade diet for a dog with food allergies? or a cheaper product?...this cost is on top of his steroid injections every 10 days until he is better .(he is insured but this doesnt cover the food needed to keep him well). Does anyone use a diet that has worked ?we also have another dog and 2 cats to care for hence the cost issue!
Thanks for the great answers so far.He has had tests at the vets to determine the allergy including blood tests but the results didnt show what it was! but he is suffering with sore and itchy skin and has gone bald around his eyes.
A: I've recently changed my german shepherd with food intolerance to royal canine sensitivity. A big bag which is about £40 (14kg) last almost a month. Another option is burns dry food (venison) - this is recommended for food intolerance (approx £33/ month). It depends if you know exactly what he is allergic to. I was told usually it is an intolerance to the protein source eg chicken.
My dog was eating poorly, losing weight and had serious diarrhoea but all that has cleared up over the last few weeks with royal canin sensitivity as recommended by my vets.
Hope this helps.
My pet insurance also covers me for the a clinical diet if recommended by the vet so i am managing to claim it on his insurance. (kennel club insurance)
Q: What are the most promising treatments for food allergies, including alternative?
I have food allergies to most raw fruits, vegetables and nuts. My allergies include: tomatoes, peanuts, apples, pears, melons (all kinds), bananas, berries (all kinds), spinach, lettuce. I gradually became allergic to most of these over time with increasingly adverse reactions; mouth and throat itching and swelling.
A: Wow, that's a long list of allergies. You should seek professional advice for this, perhaps even look into natural remedies, though with a grain of salt. Most people are probably not knowledgeable enough to give you a comprehensive and helpful answer, so again, you should seek a doctors advice who specializes in these topics, and not just one doctor, but many. Good luck to you!
Q: Where can I find a quality cat food for cats with food allergies?
My cat recently began losing all his fur and was diagnosed with food allergies after eating the same food his entire life (7 years) Now I need to find a quality food that is also economical.....
A: Try switching your cat to a canned food that is all meat. It's quite likely that the grains in the dry food you were feeding have sensitized your cat to allergies. It's essentially poisonous to your cat. You should also look for a different protein source (rabbit is a good one) as unlike dogs, cats can become allergic to a protein source. As a carnivore, their primary food source needs to be protein. So look for a meat canned (or raw) food that doesn't have any grain, fruit or vegetable fillers.
Q: I have sever food allergies o wheat and all nuts, what kind of alchoholic beverages can I have?
I have other food allergies as well to seafood, fruits, beef, eggs, the list goes on. But i've heard of a few types of drinks but i just turned 21 and want to know what to drink. Any help would be great!!! Thank you!
A: Try a white wine to begin with. Something like Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. The white wines have the least amount of histamines in them to react to of all the wines and wine does not have anything added in most cases. For beer, there are some gluten free beers that you could try including Redbridge. That would be wheat free. It is based on sorghum so check that against your allergen list. The hard liquor would be the last to try but you may be ok with vodka made from potatoes, tequila, rum. The way to sample these would be to buy the small bottles like airline bottles or just buy a drink in a bar or restaurant. The problem with theses types of drinks is you will have to check what they add to the alcohol for potential allergens.
